Thoracic Surgery Service

London Bridge Hospital offers programs for the treatment of lung diseases including lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies, emphysema surgery, reconstructive airway surgery, and surgery for malignant pleural mesothelioma. Consultant thoracic surgeon Mr Lang-Lazdunski performs a complete range of thoracic surgical procedures including repair of chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum or pigeon chest.

Mr Lang-Lazdunski has a major interest in Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) / thoracoscopy and has pioneered studies in the field of minimal invasive thoracic surgery.

Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) has become the first line approach for the treatment of pleural diseases such as pneumothorax, pleural effusions and empyema.

VATS has now become the first line diagnostic approach for pleural tumours (including malignant mesothelioma) and some mediastinal tumours or cysts.

VATS is also used routinely to perform wedge resections of the lung, or to excise pulmonary nodules. It is a useful technique for the staging of lung cancer or for performing VATS lobectomies or segmentectomies for lung cancer or lung metastases.

VATS is also routinely used for performing pericardial biopsies and pleuro-pericardial window in a less invasive way.

Finally, videothoracoscopic upper thoracic sympathectomy has become the gold standard in the treatment of palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis.
